Social Services is a scientific field that offers solutions to the material and immaterial needs of individuals and groups in social context, develops ideas about how social solidarity can be, keeps in personal contact with the social groups and brings recommendations about how to raise the social welfare. In general, social service can be chosen by individuals who take it upon themselves to increase the quality of social life. In this regard, it is one of the mostly-needed professions of the age in which we are. In addition, Social Service studies are one of the few professions today which satisfy one not only from material, or financial, but also from immaterial, or moral, aspects. It is an ideal field of study for those who have a high degree of empathy and who enjoy working with the old and children in need of social protection and who dream of being helpful to the individuals and society.
There is an increasing need for the young personnel trained in field of Social Services in Turkey and in the world. This field is an important part of the service sector, which is the fastest-growing sector for long. The increased sensitivity to this field in our country especially in recent years, considered with the big investments by domestic and foreign capital owners in fields of health and education, means that this field is rather fresh in our country and that our graduates are more likely to have admirable employment opportunities in Turkey than in other developed countries. Continually-expanding sectoral conditions bring about the openings in public and private sectors. It can also be said that the profession of social service is one of the few professions with a “job guarantee” in today’s conditions.
There is a wide range of employment facility for the graduates of this department, currently increasing in number, in public and private sectors. To begin with, they are eligible to be employed at institutions affiliated to the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of National Education, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Family and Social Policies; they can also work at other public institutions like municipalities and universities, where there is a growing need for Social Service workers every year. As for the private sector, hospitals and private educational institutions, old age asylums, clinics and kindergartens as well as organizations working to serve not only the old and the disabled but also the women and the children are among the fields of employment for the graduates of our department.
