Turkey has become a power in the field of international higher education.

Turkey achieved to be a spot of attraction in international higher education.

Turkey has achieved a great progress towards becoming a centre of attraction for international students in higher education, in terms of the number of international students that have demonstrated success in 2018 as being among the first 10 countries in the world.

As of 2018 data published by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), it became the 10th country in the world with the highest number of international students in higher education with 125,138 students.

According to UNESCO 2018 data, 987,314 out of 5,571,402 international students in the world study at higher education institutions in America. America was followed by England with 452,079 students and Australia with 444,514 students, respectively.

According to UNESCO’s 2018 data, the top 10 countries in the world that attract the most international students are as follows:

1. USA

987,314

2. England

452,079

3. Australia

444,514

4. Germany

311,738

5. Russia

262,416

9. China

178,271

10. Turkey

125,138

Chairman of the Higher Education Council (YÖK) Prof. Dr. Yekta Sarac said that the number of international students has reached to 183.000 from 48.000 in Turkey since he was appointed as the chair of Higher Education Council in 2014.

Saraç explained that Turkey is becoming a centre of gravity and strengthening its place in the global arena of higher education each year.

Saraç continued his release as follows:

The share of Turkey was %1.07 in a total of 4,495,000 in 2014 has become %2.24 in a total of 5,571,000 international students in 2018.

UNESCO’s data on higher education is 2-3 years behind. 2018 data has just been announced. We believe that we will see Turkey’s rise to higher ranks in the top 10 countries in the coming years. Because the number of international students in our country, which was 154 thousand 505 in 2019, has exceeded 200 thousand as of today. In 2021, despite the pandemic conditions, we aim for this number to exceed 220 thousand through various decisions we make such as virtual fairs we organize, other promotional activities and most importantly, a good teamwork.

Some university students are being asked to take their final exams online – in a different format than they’ve ever experienced.

Remote exams are more flexible, more mindful of individual needs, and acknowledge the pressures students are under.

Here are some ways students can tailor their revision to make the most of online assessment.

Create a revision routine

First, decide what topics to cover, and what kinds of knowledge or learning the exam is testing. Tutors can help with this, as well as past papers and sample answers.

Once you’ve got your exam timetable, divide the remaining time by the number of topics to create a study schedule.

Learn concepts – not just words

Start reviewing course notes, marked essays, lecture videos and important source material. But, learn concepts and ideas, don’t memorize lots of text. Open book exams let you show you know how to apply learning, not what you can remember. But while this takes some pressure off, hunting for sources during a test can be distracting.

One solution is to make summary sheets with key ideas, quotes and analysis. This active revision helps you understand and remember information, and also makes it easier to find what you need during the exam.

Tackle Exam Anxieties

Sitting exams online, alone and during a pandemic is a huge thing – it’s OK to feel anxious or angry about it. There are also ways to manage the worries. Try to minimise stress by creating an exam space that is separate from your revision zone: sit at a desk or the kitchen table, for example, rather than in bed.

Check if your university has exam walkthroughs online. These show what the process will be like, from logging in to uploading answers. Try to download, log in and practice using any recommended software in advance. And if you’re worried about not having a computer or internet connection during the exam, ask your university to loan you a laptop, dongle, or other essential kit.

Procrastination is putting off starting or finishing a task despite knowing that it will seriously compromise the quality of your work – for instance, putting off a major class project until the last minute.

Here are four tips that can help students deal better with the root causes of procrastination when it comes to online coursework.

1. Manage motivation

When students find that their academic tasks are interesting, important and useful, they are more likely to try harder to get them done and less likely to put them off.

2. Manage goals, tasks and time

Many college students must juggle coursework, social events and work commitments at the same time. Getting more organized helps stave off procrastination. This means breaking long-term goals into smaller short-term, challenging and clear goals and tasks.

3. Create a good learning space

Another important way to avoid procrastination is to make sure that your learning environment is supportive for learning.

4. Get a little help from friends

Friends and classmates can help one another stop procrastinating. Colleagues and other contacts can hold one another accountable and help one another meet deadlines. This is particularly important for anyone who struggles with self-control.

Father of multiple intelligences theory says pursuit of deep inquiry is ‘a foolish investment’ in today’s AI-driven world

Source: Times Higher Education

Universities should train students to understand “the bigger picture”, according to a leading US psychologist who claimed that higher education institutions should reorient their teaching to combine professional training and the liberal arts.

In his memoir, A Synthesizing Mind, which was published in September, he argues that the ability to survey experiences and data across a wide range of disciplines and perspectives is a particularly valuable, but underappreciated, attribute in today’s world.

“There is tremendous pressure now in all of the developed world to be able to do things with great precision on one topic. That’s a foolish investment, because that’s exactly what’s going to get replaced by machinery” he said in an interview with Times Higher Education.

As a result, he added, academics needed to pay more attention not only to what they teach but how they teach it and to what extent they offer a broader context to students.

“Even if you’re teaching something that’s quite circumscribed, if you’re the kind of person and the kind of educator that wants to give the bigger picture and relate the subject to larger themes, then that becomes a very powerful educational tool,” he said.

We talk a lot about machines when it comes to changes in the workplace, but people are also important.

The nature of work is fundamentally changing, so workers must change and adapt. As humans, we need to tap our ability to be creative and empathetic, to be compassionate, to be collaborators. Those are the things that will make a difference, and it is reasonable to be an optimist. I think we can make this in the world because I think human work will ultimately define who we are as workers.

COVID-19 has thrust us into the midst of a world-changing event. But this is our opportunity to fundamentally change the way we work and live, and going back to “normal” shouldn’t be our goal. What we need to do is use this unique moment in history to develop a better model – one that capitalizes on our unique capabilities as workers.

Distance education program reaches students all over the world

Educational activities were disrupted due to the coronavirus outbreak worldwide, but some universities started online preparatory Turkish and English the Language programmes.

The universities consider the programmes of languages a pathway to the degree courses. Thus the students attending the programmes online or in-site will be able to start directly to degree courses next academic year.

Beykoz University TOMER starts online Preparatory Turkish Language Programme every month till April to enable students to start degree courses in September 2021. This creates a good opportunity for the candidates who does not to travel because of the pandemic this year.

The Council of Higher Education (CoHE – YÖK), leaving 39 years behind, is preparing to do the innovative works that prioritize quality and merit in universities with the motto “the New CoHE”.

The council has brought all higher education institutions in Turkey under the same roof and as of today, there are 207 higher education institutions, 8 million students, and 175,000 instructors in Turkey. CoHE is conducting studies and coordination works for a great number of people and institutions.

The goal-oriented plans made by CoHE in the field of internationalization have also started to blossom forth. With the preparation of the “Internationalization Strategy Document in Higher Education”, the number of international students from 182 countries exceeded 200,000. It should be noted that this rate of increase has not been seen in any European country in the last 3 years.

For the global coronavirus disease epidemic would not adversely affect the coming of international students to the country, CoHE organized a virtual higher education fair named the Study in Turkey YÖK Virtual Fair 2020. At the fair, visitors from 165 countries had the opportunity to meet with the representatives of higher education institutions and get detailed information online, without paying any fees.

The latest impact figures from the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) show that international tourist arrivals declined 70% in the first eight months of 2020 compared to the same period last year, amid continuing travel restrictions that have closed borders around the world during the pandemic.
UNWTO Secretary-General said “This underlines the urgent need to safely restart tourism, in a timely and coordinated manner”.

Interestingly, there have been signs of tourism demand shifting to domestic travel in at least some major world markets over the last couple of months. In Russia, for example, domestic air bookings fully recovered to levels of 2019 and actually grew by 9% in August.

With a more complete picture of the true extent of COVID’s impact on global travel, the question is increasingly when the industry can expect to begin to recover.

Based on projections by its Panel of Tourism Experts, UNWTO anticipates that the recovery in global tourism will begin in the third quarter of 2021. At least, that is the point at which a majority of the panel expects that recovery will be underway.

For many international educators, one concrete expression of a greener future will be taking steps to reduce the impact of emissions from air travel – whether that means reducing unnecessary travel, a greater reliance on virtual or hybrid events, an increasing emphasis on digital recruitment or engagement with partners abroad, or even carbon offsets to better balance the impact of necessary travel.

“We’re not about cutting back on student mobility but trying to find ways that international education can operate in a more sustainable way,” says Ailsa Lamont, the director of a climate action consultancy.

International educators are also concerned with promoting awareness of environmental impacts within the industry, and in supporting practitioners in driving change within their organisations and institutions.

The growing awareness of environmental issues within international education reflects a broader global awareness and momentum toward climate action, and of course that is partly reflected in students’ perspectives on climate issues and the extent to which good environmental practice factors in student decision making.
