The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering primarily aims to establish a strong infrastructure on basic sciences such as chemistry, biology, mathematics and basic engineering principles. More specifically, the main objective of our program is to teach the identification of engineering problems in the fields of chemistry and biology, especially biotechnology, and to find solutions by thinking analytically in the related disciplines. For this purpose, chemical and biological systems are given integrated with engineering discipline in theoretical and practical courses.
Today, the need for biological sciences and associated engineering applications becomes evident increasingly in the areas such as health, agriculture and food. In the field of medical biotechnology, new diagnostic and therapeutic methods become diversified day by day. The devices and kits that are needed in these fields are produced by engineers who are the experts on this field. The role of engineers in the transformation of fundamental science into the technology, thus, the conversion of information into the product is extremely important, when the development speed of biotechnology is considered. In agricultural biotechnology, Chemical and Biological Engineers will take important responsibilities such as the improvement of species with higher nutritional quality or resistant or tolerant species for some diseases, parasites or drought. Combination of chemistry and biology education under the framework of engineering education is extremely important in order to obtain these species by Biology Engineering and to optimize and sustain the production obtained from these species by the production skill of Chemical Engineering. In addition to the fields of medical and agricultural biotechnologies, our students can choose to specialize in areas such as environmental and energy management, biomaterials, computational biology and bioinformatics through departmental and field elective courses. When our students graduate, they can find the opportunity to work in many sectors such as food, medicine, health, electronics, chemistry, textiles, paper, materials, energy, agriculture and more in industrial, academic or administrative organizations in Turkey and abroad.
It is inevitable that engineers who have gained basic scientific and technical know-how that can follow new technological developments and plan and execute design development, production and application phases by adapting fast technological development in our country and in the world. It is the basic mission of the Department of Chemistry and Biological Engineering to train the Chemical and Biological Engineers that can contribute to the rapid technological development of the biotechnology industry in Turkey.
Apart from these, the most obvious advantage of our program is that our students who graduated from our program will be able to use effectively the techniques, equipment and modern communication tools which are necessary for up to date engineering applications and to reach the capacity to work in the areas such as multidisciplinary healthcare by taking advantage of the variety of departments in our faculty. In addition, it is our most important vision to educate individuals who are effective and confident in written and verbal communication, to bring engineers, who are experts in their fields, researching and producing, into our country and the world.
